Subway Sounds - Instrumental Music Program.
There are seven publications that make up the Subway Sounds Library of music books. The first book produced in this collection is the Subway Styles Keyboard Music Book. This was created to fill a void we felt existed in education books available at the time.Recent trends in education have shifted toward group learning and away from the traditional one on one teacher student relationship. This book will allow children of different levels to play together in an ensemble situation and thus experience the benefits of group education. It is designed to give children a strong rhythmic comprehension so as to better prepare them for ensemble music, whether this be in a choir, a rock and roll band or simply in their own instrumental group.
All children can start keyboard music from this book. It is arranged so children learning at any rate can still feel part of the group environment. Some children will learn the left hand more easily than the right hand; they can still play along with other boys and girls. Some may master the skills of playing with both hands quite quickly; they will not be held back by others as the group will be able to work together on one song, each doing a different part of that song depending on their particular skill level.
Accompanying all publication from the Subway Sounds Library is a Compact Disc. On it are all the pieces from each book. We have found in our teaching experience that a recording of each piece can help students immeasurably.
For the more experienced student, the Advanced Supplementary and Solos and Duets books are ideal. The Advanced Supplementary, is made up of pieces from the Advanced Solo section of the Keyboard Music Book and some other works. They are comprised to form a logical extension of the Keyboard Music Book and contain little theoretical information. The pieces in these two books are ideal for both electronic keyboard and piano alike.
The Solos and Duets book presents different challenges to the student. As well as having even more difficult pieces to master, there is also the added responsibility of making your own decision regarding articulation and dynamics. This book was deliberately left without these markings so as to allow the competent student to come to his/her own decision about how the piece should be realized. We have very much enjoyed hearing various students bring these pieces to life with their own individual interpretations.
The most recent contribution to the Subway Sounds Library is the Advanced Guitar Solos book. It contains numerous solo pieces and Chord Progression Exercises. Many of the pieces utilize various techniques commonly found in blues guitar playing, such as Note Bends, Slides and Hammer Ons. The Chord Progression Exercises incorporate interesting, and often tricky, chord changes matched with different strumming patterns.
One final thing we have included here is a practice treatise we penned some time ago. Many parents have in the past asked how to best help their child practice their instrument, so we wrote The Art of Music Practice Through the Subway Sounds Music Program.
